Racing season begins: April 2016!
FINALLY! Race season 2016 begins for me the second Saturday in April with the Hawkeye 25k. I’ve been looking forward to this for months. Originally, I signed up for the 50k, but life happened, and I didn’t get my training in for a variety of reasons. I figure I can suck it up and hammer out a 15-miler – as the race organizer said, “You can do it! You have 8 hours!”
After the 25k, my spring and summer will be full of fun runs, relays, and maybe a marathon this fall. Summer is my happiest time of year. I get to spend time out in the sun, building muscle and letting go of stress.
For me, 2016 presents a new challenge, too. I’m tinkering with my diet and considering going vegan. I’m already a vegetarian for all intents and purposes (dang you, taco pizza).
Lately, I’ve been watching health documentaries on Netflix while I work out, because that’s how exciting my life is, and I’ve seen a few that really jarred me. One was Fed Up, which discusses how added sugar affects kids’ health. The other is Cowspiracy, a film that discusses the sustainability of factory farming. I’m no scientist, but the visuals and topics really got to me.
As of the end of March 2016, I’m in a twilight phase where my body is hating me for not feeding it sugar and cheese. I figure if I can hack it for a few more days, I’ll be golden. At least until the kids ask for a pizza night 🙂
