After 5 years of running, I finally biffed it

It was bound to happen eventually. After 5 years, today I took my first running-related fall.

Dad and I got rained out this morning, so we postponed our weekend run to the afternoon. It was hot and muggy, and we were shifting frequently from the muddy shoulder to the road to dodge traffic.

I was doing what I normally do – talking Dad’s ear off as we plodded along. All of a sudden, I heard a pop and I was on my hands and knees. The cool thing is I didn’t even stop talking until I hit the ground!

Nothing swelled up and I could walk on it and even jogged part of the half mile or so back to my parents’ house. I ended up with a nasty cut on my knee, skinned hands, and most likely something dislocated in the general vicinity of my left foot.

Rather than being concerned about the injury, I was mad that my first running-related fall happened smack-dab in the middle of a steps per day challenge at work. I hate the idea of letting down my team. But I’m pretty darn stubborn, and I feel like there will be a lot of limping in my future! Note to all my nurse friends: please disregard the previous statement 🙂

At least my first fall generated minimal symptoms and didn’t involve a concussion. Even better, I’m glad it was me and not Dad that bit the pavement. There’s always a silver lining. And it gave me a chance to be on the receiving end of mothering for a change – Mom fixed me up with antibacterial cream and a lovely, white bandage when we got back 🙂

The one time we take the road instead of the track!
